On blocks with cylinder liners, gasket thickness is graded to the liner protrusion. Material is selected for high mileage and full-load duty.
Stop-start duty means a high number of thermal cycles. The gasket is chosen so that it recovers its original form on every cycle.
The difference in thermal expansion between an aluminium head and a cast-iron block causes movement at the joint face. A coated steel gasket absorbs that movement.
Under continuous full load and vibration, bolt preload drops. The gasket body has to hold surface pressure under those conditions.
With long service intervals and low surface pressure, the compression-set resistance of the rubber gasket is decisive.
In seawater-cooled systems, corrosion resistance comes first. The stainless grade of the layers around the coolant passages determines service life.
In continuous running at constant speed, sealing depends on the long-term dimensional stability of the material.
Every cycle produces a pressure pulse. On valve plate and head gaskets, body strength is the deciding factor.
Material is selected by fluid type, operating temperature and pressure class. Sizes with no catalog equivalent are produced to order.
For sizes not in the catalog, a sample, technical drawing or DXF file is enough. A die is prepared and production starts after sample approval.
