How to Find the Right Gasket Using the OEM Number and Engine Code?

The most common mistake when choosing an engine gasket is relying solely on the vehicle make and model. Two vehicles from the same model year may have different engines, and the same engine may have different gasket types depending on its production period. The way to find the right gasket the first time is through three pieces of information: the OEM number, the engine code, and, if necessary, the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

What is an OEM number?

The OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) number is the original part number assigned by the vehicle manufacturer. For example, in Toyota vehicles, cylinder head gaskets are identified by numbers starting with 11115- and full sets with 04111-; in Hyundai and Kia vehicles, cylinder head gaskets start with 22311- and full sets with 20910-. Aftermarket manufacturers match their products based on these numbers; therefore, the OEM number is the most reliable bridge between different brands.

Where is the OEM number written?

  • On the old part: Many gaskets have the part number or manufacturer code printed on them; on cylinder head gaskets, this is usually located on the side tab.
  • On the box or invoice of the original part
  • In authorized service and parts catalogs: Inquiries made with the VIN provide the correct number for the vehicle.

How to find the engine code?

The engine code is the group of letters and numbers that defines the engine type, such as Toyota 1ZZ-FE, Hyundai D4BH, Mitsubishi 4D56, Isuzu 4JB1, or Cummins 6BT. It is usually stamped onto the engine block; it may also appear on a label in the engine bay, in vehicle documentation, or in service records. For heavy-duty vehicles and construction machinery, the engine information plate is often on the side of the block.

SUARO TITAN product codes

Our products in the technical catalog are coded with a two-letter prefix indicating the part group and a sequence number:

VC Valve cover gasket
IN / EX Intake / exhaust manifold gasket
PI Exhaust pipe gasket

Information to provide when requesting a quote

  1. OEM number or SUARO TITAN product code
  2. Engine code
  3. Vehicle make, model, and production year
  4. Quantity
  5. Thickness class for diesel engine head gaskets

If information is incomplete, a clear photograph of the old part is often sufficient for matching. For gaskets not found in the catalog, you can request a quote with measurements or drawings on our custom-cut gasket page.
